Italian Sign Language Project

Alice Parco dei Bimbi Bilingual Pre-School develops special projects in collaboration with  various organizations. For several years, the LIS Project (Italian Sign Language) has been active at our school.

This educational initiative, carried out over the past few years, has allowed children to develop empathy toward what is new, helping to normalize it. Due to the great interest shown, we have decided to include LIS, in collaboration with the National Association for the Deaf (Bergamo Provincial Section), as an integral part of our weekly program.

The project has a twofold goal: children will be introduced to the world of deafness, guided to understand the relational and communicative challenges faced by deaf people, and taught appropriate, respectful, and effective ways to interact and communicate.

Through exposure to the language, children will also learn LIS vocabulary and gradually build up to more complex sentences. This will help them develop a richer lexicon and learn how to engage with the deaf signing community through increasingly meaningful communication.

Activities will be led by two teachers specialized in deaf education and LIS interpretation, as well as by a deaf person. The presence of a deaf adult will allow the children to have direct experience with communication and interaction in a natural and authentic way.
